Idyllwild is a beautiful mountain town located in the San Jacinto Mountains. No matter where you're coming from, the drive up offers scenic views and a peaceful arrival into nature.
Below are the best airport options and travel tips.
From Palm Springs International Airport (PSP)
Approx. Drive Time: ~1 hour
Best Route: Take CA-111 to CA-74 W (the Palms to Pines Highway), then CA-243 N into Idyllwild.
Notes:
This is the closest airport to Idyllwild.
The drive is scenic, winding, and climbs steadily—take your time and enjoy the view.
Gas up in Palm Desert or Palm Springs before heading up.
From Ontario International Airport (ONT)
Approx. Drive Time: ~1.5 to 2 hours
Best Route: Take I-10 E → CA-243 S (through Banning)
Notes:
This is a popular route and mostly freeway until the final mountain ascent.
The drive up CA-243 is winding but beautiful.
Cell service can be limited on parts of the mountain road.
From San Diego International Airport (SAN)
Approx. Drive Time: ~2.5 to 3 hours
Best Route: Take I-15 N → CA-79 N → CA-371 E → CA-74 W → CA-243 N
Notes:
This is a more rural, backroads-style route but has lighter traffic than L.A. freeways.
Plenty of scenery and smaller towns along the way.
Good idea to bring snacks and water, as stops become sparse in the final stretch.
From Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
Approx. Drive Time: ~2.5 to 3.5 hours (depending on traffic)
Best Route: Take I-10 E → CA-243 S (through Banning)
Notes:
Traffic through L.A. can be unpredictable — plan to leave during off-peak hours.
Once out of the city, it’s a fairly straightforward and scenic drive up the mountain.
Recommend grabbing food and gas before heading into the final stretch.
Travel Tips for All Routes:
Gas up before heading up the mountain. There are limited gas stations in Idyllwild.
Expect winding roads. Drive slow, especially at night or in fog.
Cell service can drop. Download directions ahead of time just in case.
